God with Us--through TV

I've been watching Scandal ever since I moved to Connecticut.  It's become a weekly ritual, and last night was no exception.

God speaks to me through TV shows, sometimes.  The scene usually takes me by surprise and brings me to tears, and I usually know what sHe is showing me in that moment.

I relate with Olivia Pope, the main character in Scandal, because she looks young for her age; wields power by being a maverick in a white man's world; and has charisma, passion, and a fiery temper, sometimes.  She relies more on her intuition than reason, and that is the source of her agency.

The world is scared of the Divine feminine--the image and power of God in the female sex--and men in church leadership often tries to squash it.  But I've tried covering up what's been given to me, and it seems legalistic and limiting.  Life has been far more fulfilling and free when I follow Jesus wherever He leads me--even if it means being uncomfortable or failing--and allow God's Spirit to work through me.  If and when that is the case, both women and men are blessed by me.

There are a few women of color at Yale Divinity School who wield power and agency and with whom I can talk about such things.  Such things have both social and spiritual implications.  Pearl and Ann are my "sisters"--and I'm hoping to see them in New Haven over Easter.

The world runs against the very grains of our beings most days, so it's important to have one another and feel supported.  The world wants to make up rules and follow them, but the Kin-dom of God is not about rules.  It's about a relationship with God and a revelation of who we are in God.

Easter is coming next week.  May we die to ourselves and the systems of man, and may we be resurrected with Christ, knowing that part of the call of following Him means partaking in His suffering as well.

Alleluia!
